--> Riverbed Steelhead is a WAN Optimization solution.
--> Riverbed Steelhead provides WAN Optimization by using the following methods:
1) Data Streamlining
2) Application Streamlining
3) Transport Streamlining
In this Blog Post, I will try to explain the concept of Data Streamlining and Working of it:
Data Streamlining
--> By using the Data Streamlining method, Riverbed Steelhead can provide the 70-80% WAN Bandwidth reduction for all the TCP-based applications.
--> Data Streamlining works based upon the proprietary concept in Riverbed Operating System known as Scalable Data Referencing.
--> Scalable Data Referencing works by dividing the Data which is received on the Riverbed Steelhead into small pieces known as chunks and by adding the reference to each chunk.
--> Let us understand this concept by taking one general example, Imagine you have multiple branch offices and one HQ Data Center.
--> Each Branche office has its own Riverbed Steelhead and we have Riverbed Steelhead in the Data Center.
--> Users in the Branch office try to access some resource that is present in the DataCenter which goes from Branch Steelhead to Data Center Steelhead using the WAN link. The following process happens between the Branch Steelhead and Data Center Steelhead:
i) Branch Office Steelhead receives the client request for the resource present in the Data Center
ii) Branch Office Steelhead initiates a new connection request to the Data Center Steelhead to get the resource.
iii) Data Center Steelhead receives the resource request from the branch steelhead over the WAN
iv) A New connection request is generated by DataCenter Steelhead for the resource from the server that is serving the request.
v) Server responds to the request by providing the resource to the Data Center Steelhead
vi) Data Center Steelhead stores the resource in its own data store (hard disk) and divides the data resource into multiple parts known as chunks and adds the reference to each chunk.
vii) Data Center Steelhead sends the chunks of the Data to Branch Steelhead.
viii) Branch Steelhead then stores the resource in the Data Store (hard disk) and sends it to the client.
--> Total 3 Connections take place from the client to the Server to access the resource.
--> As you can see, there is no WAN Optimization is happening for the First Client request from the Branch office but when the other users in the branch office try to access the same resource then the branch steelhead serves the resource without going to the Data Center Steelhead over WAN Link.
