--> Router uses the routing table to forward unicast packets based upon destination IP address.
--> Router uses the multicast routing table to forward multicast packets and packets are moved away from the source to receivers.
--> Routing table contains destination networks associated with next hop interface.
--> Multicast Routing table contains multicast groups with the incoming interface and outgoing interface list.
--> Each Multicast group can be identified in multicast routing table in two ways,
i) (S,G) --> group of receivers will receive the traffic from the specified source ( Shortest Path Tree).
ii) (*,G) --> group of receivers will receive the traffic from any/unknown source ( Shared Tree).
--> Source always will be unicast address and Group will be a multicast address.
--> In order to verify multicast routing table in Cisco routers, we use the following command
--> Every entry in the multicast routing table is associated with one single incoming interface and list of outgoing interfaces.
--> Multicast Routing Protocol (PIM) is responsible for creating multicast entries in the multicast routing table.
--> Always multicast packets on received on an incoming interface of the group and forwarded to the list of outgoing interface list.
