--> Each and every BIG IP System contains a group of MAC addresses that are used by F5 to assign the MAC address to its interfaces/VLANs/Trunks.
--> The group of MAC addresses can vary from one device to another device, It can be up to 512 Mac addresses per group.
--> Whenever any interface/VLAN/Trunk configured on F5 BIG IP System then the mac address is selected automatically from the group of MAC addresses and assigned accordingly.
--> It is possible to use the same MAC address for all the VLANs configured on the BIG IP System by setting the value of vlan.macassigment to global.
--> The values can be one of the following:
1) Unique: Each and every VLAN configured on the BIG IP System will have different MAC address
2) Global: Each and every VLAN configured on the BIG IP System will have the same MAC address
3) vmw-compat: This setting is configured on BIG IP Virtual systems.
--> In order to change the setting of MAC address assignment then execute the following command:
tmsh modify /sys db vlan.macassignment value <preferred variable unique, global or vmw-compat>
--> To Verify the current setting for MAC address assignment then execute the following command:
tmsh list /sys db vlan.macassignment
--> To check the MAC addresses assigned to the interface/VLAN/Trunk on the BIG IP System then execute the following command:
tmsh show sys mac-address
--> To check the MAC address assigned to each VLAN by typing the following command:
tmsh show net vlan
--> We can configure the above setting using GUI also ( Navigate to System > Configuration > Local Traffic > General > Share Single MAC Address option.
--> When checked the MAC address is same for all the VLANs configured on the BIG IP System and when unchecked the MAC address will be unique for each VLAN)
Note: It is not recommended to configure the same MAC address for all the VLANs if the corresponding switch which is connected to BIG IP System does not support per VLAN Mac address table. Nowadays, Most of the switches do support per VLAN Mac address table.
