--> BFD stands for Bidirectional Forwarding Detection.
--> BFD is a protocol that detects the link failure very fast compared to the routing protocols that use hello and hold timers to detect link failures.
--> With the help of BFD we can detect link failures in the time span of milliseconds.
--> Fast Convergence is required in case of the networks such as VOIP.
--> BFD detects link failure by sending control packets between two routers.
--> Once We configure BFD on the interface then we need to link BFD to routing protocol ( EIGRP, OSPF, BGP).
--> Once BFD detects the link failure it passes this information to the routing protocol so that it can tear down the neighbor relationship or use an alternative path.
--> BFD does not affect the router performance as it uses ASIC.
--> There is two step process to configure BFD on the routers.
i) Enable on the Interface
Router(config)# interface fa0/0
Router(config-if)# bfd interval 300 min-rx 300 multiplier 4
Note: In this configuration, BFD hello timer 300 msec and BFD dead timer is 1200 msec
ii) Link it to Routing Protocol
Router(config)# router eigrp 100
Router(config)# bfd all-interfaces
--> It is better to configure BFD on the networks where there is more than one path to reach between two routers.
--> To verify BFD neighbor relationships between the router, use the following command
Router# show bfd neighbors
