--> MPLS VPN is mainly designed to carry IP traffic over shared network or service provider backbone.
--> Many customers still use ATM, leased lines and frame relay. Service Providers need to use separate infrastructure to carry layer 2 traffic from customers.
--> ATOM provides a solution to use same MPLS backbone for forwarding Layer 2 traffic as well as Layer 3 traffic, eliminating to run two different infrastructures side by side.
--> ATOM stands for Any Transport over MPLS.
--> ATOM is also called as Layer 2 VPN as it creates VPN at Layer 2.
--> By using ATOM we can only create layer 2 point to point service which is also called as Virtual Private Wire Service ( VPWS).
--> In order to create layer 2 point to multipoint, we need to use another service called as Virtual Private Lan Service ( VPLS).
--> The advantage of using ATOM is, Provider Edge routers need not to run IP routing protocol as in MPLS VPN.
--> Before ATOM, Service providers implemented Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol Version 3 ( L2TPV3) which uses IP Backbone to carry Layer 2 traffic.
--> Whereas ATOM uses MPLS backbone to carry Layer 2 traffic.
