IGMP is a protocol used between host and router. IGMP does following functions
1) Host will inform the router about interest in particular multicast group means host want to join particular multicast group for receiving multicast traffic.
2) Host will inform the router it is no more interested in receiving traffic from particular group means host want to leave particular multicast group.
Note: Each and Every Router will maintain list of multicast groups which are active on a particular interface of the Multicast Router. By Default IGMP works in Version 2.
Mainly IGMP uses following messages for the operation.
1) IGMP Report :
--> Sent by Host to the Local Router to join a particular multicast group.
--> Sent by Host when it receives the Query message from the Router.
--> Sent by host on Multicast Address 224.0.0.2 or on Particular Multicast Group IP address.
2) IGMP Query :
---> Sent by Local Router on a particular interface of the Router to know whether hosts are interested to receive multicast traffic or not.
--> Query Message will be sent for every 60 seconds on a particular interface.
--> Sent by Router on Multicast Address 224.0.0.1
Note: All hosts will receive Query Message which are connected to LAN interface, but only one host in LAN will responds to Query Message instead of all hosts. This is called as Report Suppression mechanism, which is used to save the bandwidth.
3) IGMP Leave
--> Sent by Host to the Local Router to leave a particular multicast group.
--> When Router receives the Leave message from host, Router will send Group Membership Query instead of General Query , If it gets Report message within 3 minutes it will continue sending of multicast traffic on that interface.
--> Sent by host on Multicast Address 224.0.0.2.
