Q) 192.168.1.0/28 Find i) No.of Subnets ii) No.of Hosts?
A: i) No .of Subnets
--> In order to find a number of subnets we need to calculate the number of subnet bits. To calculate subnet bits use this formula
SUBNET BITS = (Customized Subnet Mask) - ( Default Subnet Mask)
Customized Subnet Mask = whatever the subnet mask is given in the problem ( Here it is 28)
Default Subnet Mask = Subnet Mask for Particular Class ( Here it is 24 because of Class C)
SUBNET BITS = 28-24 = 4
--> Now we need to find out the number of subnets, for that use following formula
No.of Subnets = 2 ^ subnet bits
No.of Subnets = 2^4 =16 Subnets
ii) No .of Hosts
--> In order to find the number of subnets we need to calculate the number of subnet bits. To calculate Host bits use this formula

ii) No .of Hosts
--> In order to find the number of subnets we need to calculate the number of subnet bits. To calculate Host bits use this formula
HOST BITS = (Total number of bits in an IP address ) - (Customized Subnet Mask)
Total Number Of Bits = IPV4 -- 32
IPV6----128
Here we are using IP version 4 so that's why the number of bits will be 32
Host Bits = 32-28 = 4
--> Now we need to find out the number of hosts, for that use following formula
No.of Hosts= 2 ^ Host Bits -2
No.of Hosts = 2^4 -2 = 14 hosts
--> Like that, we can calculate the number of hosts and subnets.
Q) 192.168.1.14/28 Find i) Network ID ii) Broadcast ID iii) Valid Hosts
A) i) Network ID
--> To find Network ID convert host bits into zeros.
--> Always subnet mask indicates network bits, in the given problem first 28 bits are network bits remaining 4 bits are host bits, to find Network ID just convert or make host bits into zeros.
192 . 168 . 1 . 14
11000000 10101000 00000001 00001110
-- Now make last 4 host bits into zero to find network id.
11000000 10101000 00000001 00000000
192 168 1 0
Network ID: 192.168.1.0
ii) Broadcast ID
--> To find Broadcast ID convert host bits into ones.
192 . 168 . 1 . 14
11000000 10101000 00000001 00001110
--> Now make last 4 host bits into ones to find the Broadcast id.
11000000 10101000 00000001 00001111
192 168 1 15
Broadcast ID: 192.168.1.15
iii) Valid Hosts in the network
--> To find valid hosts use this formula
Valid Hosts = (Network ID +1) to ( Broadcast ID - 1)
Valid Hosts= (192.168.1.0+1) to (192.168.1.15-1)
= 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.14
