There are two types of traffic in Junos
1) Transit Traffic
2) Exception Traffic
1) Transit Traffic:
-> Transit Traffic is the traffic that is passing via the junos device
-> Transit Traffic is forwarded from one ingress port to multiple egress ports based upon type of the traffic ( unicast or multicast) using forwarding table.
-> Transit Traffic is handled by Packet Forwarding Engine only
2) Exception Traffic
-> Exception Traffic is the traffic that is destined to the local device only.
-> Exception Traffic is handled by Packet Forwarding Engine as well as Routing Engine.
-> Exception Traffic like ICMP messages are handled by Packet Forwarding Engine and remaining traffic is handled by Routing Engine ( Routing Protocol Updates).
