--> PPPoE stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet,
--> PPPOE is a network protocol for sending Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames inside Ethernet frames.
--> PPPOE technology combines features of both PPP and Ethernet technologies.
--> PPPoE used by an Internet service provider (ISP) to provide internet access to home users using broadband.
--> If you take our PC is getting Internet Via DSL modem, Our PC is connected to DSL modem via Ethernet.
--> The main problem with Ethernet frames is they don't have authentication capability.
--> If we want users to authenticate via Ethernet frames using username and password that case we can use PPPOE.
--> PPP frames contain username and password and we are placing this PPP frames into Ethernet frame or we are encapsulating PPP frames into Ethernet frames, This technology is called as PPPoE ( Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet).
--> PPP supports two types of Authentication methods.
1) PAP( Password Authentication Protocol): sends the password in the clear text format
2) CHAP( Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol): Sends the password in hash format.
PPPOE Advantages
1. With the help of PPPoE, we can check the user is offline or online.
2. PPPoE provides both static and dynamic IP Address assignment to the users.
3. PPPOE authenticates the users by using PAP and CHAP.
4. Using PPPoE we can track how much bandwidth is consumed by the user.
PPPOE Stages
1) Discovery Stage
--> In this stage, a PPPoE client tries to discover, one or more servers and selects one of them to establish PPPoE session.
--> This stage uses four messages: initialization, offer, request and session confirmation.
--> PPPoE client sends PADI ( PPPoE Active Discovery Initialization) frame to the Layer 2 Broadcast Address (FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF) to discover PPPoE Server.
--> PPPOE Server sends PADO (PPPoE Active Discovery Offer) frame to the PPPoE client when it receives PADI frame. PPPoE client can receive the PADO frames from multiple servers.
--> PPPOE client selects one server and sends PADR ( PPPoE Active Discovery Request) frame to it.
--> PPPOE Server creates a unique session identification (ID) for the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) session and sends this ID to the PPPoE client in the PADS packet ( PPPoE Active Discovery Session confirmation).
--> Now both the PPPOE client and PPPOE Server knows the mac address of each other.
2) Session Stage
--> In this stage, PPPOE Server performs authentication and assigns IP Address to the PPPOE Client.
--> Now all the PPPoE information is encapsulated within an Ethernet frame and is sent to a unicast address of PPPOE Sever.
