MPLS is a forwarding method, in which packets are forwarded based upon labels. It is called as Multi protocol because it is going to support all the protocols like Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay and PPP. The main advantage of MPLS is it reduces overhead on the router because it is forwarding data based upon labels and reduces delay.
In order MPLS to work between the routers, there are some requirements
i) CEF need to be enabled on all the routers
ii) IGP protocol need to be enabled on all the routers.
iii) Label protocol for forwarding Labels ( LDP by default if you dont specify).
iv) Router-ID used for LDP must be reachable before configuring LDP otherwise neighbor relationships won't form...
